At HLC, our mission is to develop strategies that enable landscape architecture to play a significant role in resilience-building within the world’s most vulnerable communities. We are dedicated to harnessing the power of landscape architecture to address global challenges and improve the lives of those who are most at risk from environmental disasters and other crises.

Our Journey So Far

The first step towards this goal was our workshop series on the role of nature-based solutions and the built environment in disaster-resilience, which we concluded in March this year. These workshops were an invaluable first step in understanding how landscape architecture can contribute to building stronger, more resilient communities.

The Next Step: Formulating Our Strategy: We are thrilled to announce the next phase of our work: synthesising the outcomes of our research to develop a comprehensive strategy. This strategy aims to deepen our understanding of global challenges and their impact on vulnerable communities. Additionally, we will be analysing the landscape architecture and international development sectors to explore potential collaborations that can effectively support these communities.

How You Can Get Involved

This ambitious endeavour requires the collective effort of our entire network. Here are several ways you can contribute:

• Join Our Volunteer Team: We need dedicated individuals to help us implement our strategy, raise awareness, and expand our communications efforts. If you are passionate about our cause, we would love to have you on board.

• Speak to Our Team: Whether you are a landscape architect or have experience in international development work or research, your insights are invaluable. We are eager to discuss future collaborations and explore how landscape architecture can intersect with international development.

• Share Your Expertise: We are continuously seeking projects, publications, and thought pieces to enrich our resource library. Our goal is to create an extensive collection of knowledge related to ‘humanitarian landscape architecture.’ If you have valuable contributions, we encourage you to share them with us.

• Join Our Sessions: Our learning journey continues with mini-workshops and Pecha Kucha-style sessions. These events will further our understanding of ‘humanitarian landscape architecture’ and provide opportunities for knowledge sharing. Stay tuned for details on how and when you can participate or speak at these sessions.
